These words by Emerson sum up my feelings on the key to creating unique, world-class instruments. It’s not about what others have done. Nor is it about forecasting future trends. It is about understanding who you are, what it important to you and how that is reflected in an instrument. You see, I believe that every person is unique. If someone can look within themselves and be honest about what they find, have the courage to create from within, and eventually share it with the world; it will be unique. The world class part comes with honest interrogation of your own work and the will to carry on. The idea that a unique person can result in a unique instrument, is more than wishful thinking. It has come from two decades of working with such people. The creators of the unique, world class instrument, makers from all parts of the world. It is the same in North and South America, as it is in Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Africa. All, unique souls, with a unique perspective. Some are aware of it and some arrive without being conscious of it. The good news is, that everyone can get there, if the will to do so is strong enough. Sometimes it is helpful to have someone take you through this process. I have worked with a number of talented instrument makers to help them discover their unique approach with positive results.
